Introductio
Our FTP Backup Service provides our customers with another way to maximize their investment in Internet connectivity. Customers using this service can transfer their data files to Custom Data Centre using a secure Internet connection. Customers that make use of this new service will enjoy the benefits of having a copy of their important data stored in an off-site location without the hassle of transporting backup tapes or compact discs between their office and an off-site storage location. Data that is uploaded to our FTP server is copied to a portable media and stored in our offsite storage facility for a period one year from the date of uploading.
What is File Transfer Protocol (FTP)?
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is the simplest way to exchange files between computers on the Internet.
Like the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which transfers displayable Web pages and related files, and the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), which
is used to send e-mail, FTP is an application protocol that uses the Internet's TCP/IP protocols.
FTP is commonly used to transfer Web page files from their creator to the computer that acts as their server for everyone on the Internet.
It is also commonly used to download programs and other files to your computer from other servers.
Your Web browser can perform the FTP commands necessary download programs and files that you select from a Web page.
Using FTP commands, you can also update (delete, rename, move, and copy) files on an FTP server but in order to do so, you need to logon to the FTP server.
Why do I need an FTP client program?
If you know the FTP command set, you can use FTP with a simple command line interface (for example, from the Windows MS-DOS Prompt). However, because of the graphical user interface, FTP client programs make it possible for virtually anyone to connect to an FTP server and then send, or receive, files without having any knowledge of the actual FTP commands.
Do I have to use a particular FTP program to communicate with your FTP server?
No. You may use any FTP client program that provides Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) security.
For the cost-conscious, we can provide you with a copy of Core FTP
Lite. This free FTP client:
· Is easy to install.
· Is easy to use.
· Transfers files faster than many other free FTP programs.
Because of it's superior features, such as scheduled transfers and a more intuitive user interface, Custom Data Centre recommends the use
of
.
Do I need a high-speed Internet connection?
While a high-speed Internet connection will permit you to send and receive files more quickly, all FTP functionality is also available to dial-up Internet users.
Practically speaking, relying on a dial-up connection to access any kind
of data backup service is not recommended.
Is my data “safe” when I transmit it over the Internet?
In most cases, data that is transmitted over the Internet could be read by anyone who was able to capture and analyze the data that is transmitted over your Internet connection.
However, most FTP application programs, and most FTP servers, are able to communicate using Secure Sockets Layer
(SSL). SSL is frequently used by financial institutions to ensure that data transmitted over the Internet can only be read by the 2 computer that comprise the SSL connection.
This is accomplished by using a sophisticated encryption algorithm. Our FTP server is configured to require that your computer communicate with our FTP server using an SSL connection.
Can other users of your FTP server see my data after it has been uploaded?
No. In order to connect to our FTP server you must have a valid User Name and Password.
Each user of our FTP service is restricted to an assigned space on our FTP server.
The only way that someone else could gain access to your directory space on our FTP server is if you provided them with your User Name and Password or if you provided them with either the original, or a copy of,
the FTP Utility CD that we prepare for you when you sign-up for our FTP Backup
Service.
Can I change my User Name and Password?
No. Only the FTP server administrator has the authority to change User Names and Passwords.
If you believe that someone else may have discovered your password, you should contact the FTP server administrator immediately and request a new Password.
